Frequently Asked Questions

About my products

What are herb infused oils?

An oil infusion is a method of extracting beneficial constituents of a plant ally into a carrier oil such as olive, sesame, grapeseed, etc. The oils may be used as a standalone support remedy, or they can be used as a base oil for many body care recipes including soaps, butters, lotions, scrubs, and more.

Are they essential oils?

Herbal body oils are not essential oils. They are made through a simple extraction process of infusing the whole herb in a carrier oil such as olive oil. Whole plant infusions extract multiple constituents from a plant, whereas essential oils are the extraction of only the volatile oils of a plant through a process of distillation.

What does “organically grown but not certified,” mean?

“Organically grown but not certified,” means that the grower, either myself or another small-scale medicinal herb grower from whom I source, follows growing standards that would meet or exceed the USDA Organic certification, but they have not pursued the official label. Reasons for not pursuing USDA Organic certification varies, however it often comes down to the certification simply being overly costly. I am of the mind that cultivating relationships with those who grow the herbs (and foods) that I consume or otherwise use in my products to understand their growing practices for myself far supersedes the importance of most third-party certifications. That being said, in the case of ingredients for which I haven’t yet found a local/small-scale supplier, I opt for USDA Organic (for example, the olive oil I use for my infused oils.)
